Exhibition Kannenbäckerland

19 January - 11 May

Ceramics from Westerwald

19 January 2025 to 11 May 2025

Like the province of Limburg, Westerwald (Germany) has been an important centre of ceramic production for centuries. The famous ‘Cologne pots’ that can still be found in many Dutch households did not come from Cologne but from that region. This ceramic tradition continues to this day. Still in Höhr Grenzhausen are the Institute for Ceramics and Glass Art and the School of Ceramics. The Ceramics Museum Westerwald, which displays historical and contemporary ceramics, is also located there. Many young talented makers settle in Westerwald with their studios.

The exhibition will focus on the history of ceramics from Westerwald and how large quantities of German stoneware were made for the Dutch market. On display will be work by well-known makers such as Elfriede Balzar Kopp and Heiner Balzar (who enjoyed his apprenticeship in Tegelen, among others). In addition, one can also enjoy the work of a whole new generation of makers. Some with already established names and others recently graduated.
