Pottery throwing demonstration
Everything that used to be made on the potter's wheel came about with the bare hand and human strength. Nothing electric power! Kicking the flywheel until the spade wheel turned hard enough. A huge drain on the potter's knees. But he had no choice, it was his livelihood. Today, he uses a gently whirring electrically powered potter's wheel. However, the technique of clay handling is still the same as it was thousands of years ago: mastery and skill.
For only €35, our potter will show you the intricacies of the craft.
Demonstration 3D printer
In the middle of the museum presentation on the history of ceramics in the region, there is recently a state-of-the-art computer-controlled machine: a 3D printer for clay. The ceramist shows you how it works and explains how it goes from a design on the computer screen to a piece in clay. You will be introduced to different designs.
The cost for a demonstration of the 3D clay printer is €25 per demonstration.
Calibration demonstration
Series work on the potter's wheel is tiring, goes slowly and is also a bit boring. That's why the calibrating wheel was developed in the 19th century. Calibration is done with a machine with a rotating plaster mold. In this, a slab of clay is pressed into the desired shape with an attachment. Within seconds, the bowl or dish is ready and they are all exactly the same size. For the demonstrations in the Tiendschuur we use an original calibrating machine from around 1940, originating from the fine ceramics workshop Russel-Tiglia with which tableware and commemorative plates were made.
Cost of a calibration demonstration is €25 per demonstration.
