Building with clay
15 September 2023 - 14 January 2024
Ode to the inestimable value of clay as a building material
In the exhibition for this autumn 2023, the theme chosen is “Building with clay”, following 250 years of the roof tile industry in Tegelen. In 1873, the first roof tile factory opened in Tegelen. Many more followed later. Vitrified clay pipes, toilet pots, bricks, flower pots and coarse kitchen ceramics have also been made here on a large scale since then. Still today, 65% of all Dutch roof tiles are produced in Tegelen.
This exhibition will focus briefly on this rich history. But above all, the exhibition gives space to contemporary renowned artists to be inspired by this theme. Each does so in his or her own unique way. Some literally build with clay, others create stacks, installations or architectural objects. Yet another incorporates existing industrial ceramic products into his work such as tiles, roof tiles or bricks. With their intriguing works of art, they pay tribute to building with ceramics and show that clay is invaluable as a building material.
